Helleberg Lotta, USA: Botanical Bounty: exploring natural mark making

Lotta Helleberg is a Swedish-born artist based in Virginia, USA. For more than a decade she has experimented with textile printmaking, and most recently focused on botanical contact printing, relief processes, and local plant-based dyes to render works that both document and celebrate her immediate surroundings. Her unconventional wall and book works have been shown in dozens of solo and group exhibitions across the US and Canada. She has been featured in several publications, including Natural Processes in Textile Art by Alice Fox, Art Quilting Studio, and American Craft.

Botanical Bounty: exploring natural mark making

We will create natural marks and patterns on fabric and paper, using leaves and other plant materials found in our surroundings. Students will experiment with natural printing techniques, such as botanical contact printing (eco-printing), and we will use thickened dyes to make additional impressions and drawn marks. Work samples, enhanced with layering techniques and hand stitching, will be bound into a soft textile covered book. No prior experience needed.
