ATKINS Christine, Australia: Reliquaries & Shrines

Christine Atkins is a sculpture artist working in fibre, metal, wood and found objects.  Her work is deeply influenced by her background in psychology, art therapy and her personal connection to the landscape.  Interwoven in each piece is a complex interaction of direct external observations and internal emotions, experiences and processes.  Hidden depth and emotions call for interaction and understanding, for connection and acknowledgement of the secreted meaning, symbolism, and metaphors, personal yet collective. Bringing warmth and honesty to her workshops, Christine helps people push their personal boundaries, confidence and abilities to a new level.  Both beginning and more advanced students are welcome and catered for.  You can see more of Christine’s artwork at her website www.christineatkins.net

Reliquaries & Shrines

Hand carved reliquaries and shrines hold all that is precious.   Doors and rusty nails protect the collection of stories, journeys, hopes and dreams secreted inside.

Contained within these assemblages are found objects, handmade books and constructed treasuresy Your shrine can be coloured in a variety of ways and can be protected with rusty nails or decorated with carving or wood burning. Once your reliquary is carved you will learn a range of techniques to form sacred objects for your shrine including aging polymer clay to represent old pottery and bone, cobbling fibre, and working with found objects to create your own personal relics.   A special metal and mica book adds interest and narrative to your piece.  We will be using a variety of power tools during the week, including a jigsaw, router, dremel and drill. Workshop materials fee is $100 which includes your timber, timber stains, metal, hinges and perspex for your reliquary door, plus a few extras.
